How to Post a Job Online and Find Your Next Awesome Employee

Finding quality candidates and getting to apply for your job posting can be difficult. It doesn’t have to be, and now there are even more resources than ever to get your job posting in front of your next great employee. We have all the tips on how to post a job online.

Many of these resources don’t cost you a thing but give you the option to promote or sponsor your posting. In this post, we want to give you information on how to post a job online and to create the perfect job posting in this digital world.

1. Create the Perfect Job Posting

It doesn’t matter how good you are at getting your job posting online and out to the world…if the posting itself isn’t the best it can be. Before you hit “update”, let’s make sure we go over some of the big things to think about when creating that next job posting.

Analysis

Before you put pen to paper or fingertips to the keyboard, you should do an analysis of what you are trying to accomplish with the job posting. 

Find a similar job posting from a competing company or just a comparable position elsewhere. See how the Title, Compensation, and Description compare. This can help you see what else is out there and let you make changes to your posting to be even more competitive.

Copy and Content

The copy (or the words and content) of your job posting is the most important part of this entire process. You may think it’s just as simple as writing out the duties qualifications and that’s a big part of it but there are some things to keep in mind. 

Structure your post in a way that it can quickly be read and understood. This is an example of how to order and structure your job posting. 

Introduction: What the job is and who your company is.

Compensation: Pay range, benefits, and perks.

Qualifications: Years of experience, education, and certifications.

Job Details: What the person will do in the job and how they will be measured.

 

You want to find the right balance of getting the important information across while being concise. Try to stick in the 300 – 700 word range; long postings tend to get fewer applicants. If you are posting to LinkedIn, you will want to be even more compact because it is viewed very heavily on mobile devices.

Bullet points and short, concise sentences are your friends. These make it super easy for your posting to be read and understood. Ideally, bullet points will take up about 40% of your posting and aim for an average word per sentence of 13 to maximize your listing.

There are three important things to make sure you always include in your job listing and ideally in this order: Compensation, Qualifications, and Job Details. This may sound obvious but many listings are missing one or more of them and that could cause ideal candidates to not apply. 

Tone

Use a tone that is professional but let your company’s personality shine through but be careful not to be too casual. Postings that are too casual can turn off potential applicants. People want to know they are going to be potentially working with capable professionals.

Timing

The timing of your post is important as well. The beginning of the week is the most popular time for when people are viewing listings and applying. Getting the posting up first thing Monday morning can get it in front of the most eye possible. 

Now, you have written a fantastic job description and crafted the ideal posting, it’s time to learn how to post your online and get it in front of the right candidates. 

2. Where to Post Your Listing

You now have written a fantastic job posting, now it’s time to get it in front of your next employee. You have a ton of options on where to post but let’s start with posting it on your website and then move on to other sites. 

Your Site

Harness the traffic on your site. If people are finding you, you must be doing something right (and if not, us at US Digital Partners, can help with that) but having a killer careers page is a great way to highlight your company while continuing the culture you have built. 

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is one of the best places to post a job because of the sheer volume of users. There are 756 Million global users and 178 Million users in the United States —  and over 100 million job applications sent each month on the platform.

LinkedIn uses insights to look at job postings, the companies on the platform, and all of its user profiles to find good fits. Through LinkedIn, y have the ability to screen your applicants based on must-haves (like experience and education) and the ability to rate them based on who you would like to interview the most. LinkedIn has both free and paid tiers, which makes it flexible enough to suit the needs of just about any company. 

Indeed + Glassdoor

Indeed and Glassdoor are sister companies but they each have different roles in the job market. 

Indeed is another top place for job seekers and employers alike with 1.5 Million US companies using the platform and 4.5 Million monthly job listings. Some unique features it boasts are Screening Questions, where candidates can answer specific questions and this lets you get to know them a little better to make a more informed decision. 

There are also Indeed Skill Tests that candidates can take to prove their knowledge and expertise to help them stand out from the crowd and this also lets you know how qualified they are. 

Indeed also allows free and paid options like Indeed. The free postings show up in search results based on how recently they were posted but for as little as $5 a day, you can keep the posting at the top for the right searches and candidates but the paid options will be explained better in the sections below.

Glassdoor is less about job postings and more about transparency in the workplace. The goal of Glassdoor is to allow employers to understand their employees and how they feel. If you have created a place where employees feel valued and love where they work, this can be a huge selling point for you as an employer. 

Indeed and Glassdoor together can be a very effective tool in your hiring. The way these sites work together is a big step in connecting the employer and potential employee. Indeed shows the ratings of a company that employees give it and if a potential applicant is looking for company ratings on Glassdoor about a company, if they like what they see, they can find out if they are hiring without leaving the site.

Industry-Specific Sites

LinkedIn and Indeed are not one-size-fits-all solutions for your online job board needs. One may work better than the other and it’s also possible that they aren’t the right fit for you. Try a job board for your specific industry, For example, All Retail Jobs is a site for people looking for retail jobs or Jobs in Manufacturing for finding help in the manufacturing industry. Social Media

Leverage your social media! People may not think to post a job online to their social media but you’ve built a group of people who already interact and engage with you, some of them are sure to want to work for you or know somebody who would. Share your job posting by a link from your own website (or another job posting site) and put it out there. 

This can be generic or super specific. It can be as simple as posting “We are hiring!” and adding a link to your careers page, or you can post the specific opportunity itself and give people some more detail about it. This is up to you and what you think your followers will interact and engage with best. Always make sure to play into the strength of the platform you are using as well. 

3. Take Your Search To The Next Level

Sometimes just posting your job opening on your careers page and LinkedIn or Indeed just doesn’t get enough applicants or the right applicants. That’s when it could be time to turn to a promoted or sponsored listing. 

Some other reasons to do a paid, or pay-per-click, campaign are if you need to fill a position as soon as possible or the job market is very competitive or you may have an ongoing hiring need. 

On LinkedIn, if you promote your listing it will be sent out or shown to people that LinkedIn thinks could be interested in your job. This can show up in LinkedIn’s in-app messaging, the Jobs Feed, or in the “Jobs Recommended for You” tab and is a very effective way at increasing your post’s reach.

Indeed’s paid job posting promotion works a little differently than LinkedIn. Indeed’s job feed has all the postings that it matches based on searched keywords but as more jobs get posted, your posting moves further and further down the list. The paid promotion keeps your posting at the top of the feed when the right people search related keywords to your posting.
